Christmas Card Outtakes

This year I thought that maybe I could get a good cute winter photo of Eleanor that we could use as a Christmas card photo since I wasn't too into the idea of getting family pictures done with me 8 months pregnant. So, one day I tried to do a photo shoot with Eleanor and it did not go over well. As I sat down to look through the photos I got, I couldn't help but laugh at the reoccurring poses I captured...

Looking at them still makes me laugh!

And here's what we ended up using, a picture we took while down in AZ for Thanksgiving...

Christmas 2014

Well, it's almost May, but I'm just now getting around to posting about Christmas. At least I'm still trying to catch up!

Sam got a promotion at work in November, but the downside of it was that he had to start "shift schedule". It is this crazy schedule that changes between 12 hour night shifts and day shifts. He has 4 days on, a few off, 3 days on, a few off, 4 days on... I still haven't figured it out all. He has to stick to the 4 week rotation schedule, meaning no matter what the day is he is scheduled to work - he works it, holiday or no holiday. He has one partner and can only schedule vacation time if that partner is not taking it off and since Sam is the newbie... he doesn't exactly get first pick. (The main benefit to this schedule is that every 4 weeks he does get 1 week off!) Any way, I'm explaining this all because he was assigned to his shift crew mid-December and the schedule turned out to be the absolute worst for what we had hoped for in order to make the trip down to AZ for Christmas. We had already bought plane tickets hoping we could somehow make those dates work, but it wasn't going to happen. Fortunately, we had the opportunity to travel down for the Thanksgiving holiday and did so to also attend Sam's brother's homecoming. So, we had all been in Arizona a little prior to Christmas but it still broke my heart to think of not being in town for my favorite holiday and being together with all of my family (it was my family's "on" year). Since Sam had to work almost every day the week of Christmas, he sent Eleanor and I down to Arizona (thanks Sammy!) and we traveled back to Wyoming on Christmas Eve. It worked out pretty well, I missed having Sam with us but Eleanor and I had fun, Sam didn't even miss us much since he was working the whole time, and we still got to celebrate Christmas together as our own little family.

I was so excited for us to be twins :)  I was also thrilled to see my mom's Christmas tree up. Decorating Chirstmas trees is one of my favorite traditions of the holiday and my mom's tree is my favorite!

I tried getting a good picture of Eleanor on Christmas Sunday, but this was the best I could get...

My mom has a tradition of buying all of the grandkids matching pajamas and then we take a photo of all of them together in front of the Christmas tree. Can you spot Eleanor? Between everyone with cameras out we took a billion photos and Eleanor would not cooperate for a single one. Everyone kept saying it adds personality to the photos. Oh geez!

Christmas Eve morning, Eleanor and I flew back to Salt Lake City and then hit the road to make it back to Wyoming. We made it home just in time to see Sam for only a few minutes before he headed out to work. Christmas Eve night was definitely different than any other year, but I was so excited for the morning and for Eleanor to experience Christmas! She was still too young to really comprehend what was going on with the Christmas tree, decorations, and presents but I knew she would be happy opening presents the next day.

Sam made it home about 7 am and shortly after Eleanor woke up so our day began! Our tree with all the gifts (Santa and family gifts included)
Eleanor wanted her milk right away (as usual) but it didn't take her long for something to catch her eye and we assured her she could go look at her stocking!

Sam went a little above and beyond in ordering gifts and filling our stockings while we were out of town. There were some good surprises! We kept laughing because Eleanor saw her can of Salt & Vinegar Pringles (she's obsessed) and a big container of Tic Tacs in her stocking and didn't want to move onto anything else before opening both.
And then the real fun began...

We had fun just spending time together the rest of the day. We hadn't received any snow yet in the winter but it DUMPED snow on Christmas day! Every time I looked out the window I just had a heart full of gratitude that the snow came Christmas day and not Christmas Eve. Had it been a day earlier Eleanor and I probably wouldn't have been able to make it back home since they often close some of the roads between our home and SLC when there are bad storms. We spent a little time outside playing with the snow. Eleanor was in heaven. My first White Christmas!

It really was a special day. I feel so blessed to have my little family as well as the knowledge of our Savior's birth and life and for the opportunity to celebrate it each year at Christmas.

We took these photos later in the week. Only one month left until we would meet our boy!

Cute as a Button Baby Shower

My amazing friend, Natalie, threw me the most adorable baby shower at the start of January. The theme was "Cute as a Button". From the invites, decorations, to party favors - everything was so adorable! We started the party with eating some delicious food and then Natalie had everyone decorate cute little wooden blocks with sharpie markers (her dad cut all the blocks!). After that and some chit-chat we played a game. Natalie had asked me to talk to mine and Sam's parents to get 10 facts each of different things we had done before the age of 7. She read them in random order and everyone had to guess if the fact was mine or Sam's. It was a really cute, simple and fun game! I even learned facts about both Sam and myself from what info our parents had sent. After that I opened gifts and Natalie sent everyone home with either blue or white nail polish as a favor. It was a fun afternoon and baby boy and I felt spoiled!

The cute invite...

And adorable themed decorations...

Natalie had asked me to get her some of my ultrasound pictures, and she used them as decor...

The hostess with the mostess! She really is the sweetest and went above and beyond in hosting the whole shower. I am blessed to have such a great friend. Thank you, Natalie!!!

Our Sweet Boy

I tried to get some good newborn shots of our sweet boy. These were taken on his 1 week birthday! Jordan is a very calm and content baby. He has a little fussy period every evening, but besides that, he mainly sleeps, eats, and sits contently throughout the day. He is a big spitter-upper so I've learned to always have a burp cloth on hand and to be prepared for multiple outfit changes in a single day.
Everyone asks who he looks like, and we don't know! He has a different look than Elle did as a newborn. I've heard a few comments that people see a little of me in him and a few comments that he looks like a Nielsen. It will be fun to see how his look changes and if we see any more resemblance as he gets older...

After having Eleanor give us quite the run for our money when she was an infant, I knew that my second baby HAD to be easier...and he is! I am grateful for his calm spirit and love holding my fresh-from-heaven little guy!

Jordan Brett Nielsen

I've got a few months of catching up to do on the blog still, but I wanted to get Jordan's birth story down while most of the details were still pretty fresh to me.

For a few different reasons, I had decided that I wasn't going to deliver at our local hospital in Rock Springs, WY. Sam and I had both agreed that we'd like to use the doctor that delivered Eleanor and I would travel down to Provo for all my prenatal appointments and then stay at my parent's condo for the two weeks leading up to my due date, in case anything happened early. My mom had said that she would come up to Utah early to be with Eleanor and I as we waited for the baby (Sam would still be working those days in Wyoming). My Dad also came into town for the week before I was due, which turned out to be a great blessing! So...

I was due with Nielsen Baby #2 on February 1st, 2015. On Tuesday, January 27th, I went into the doctor for a normal check-up. I was surprised to learn that I was dilated to a one (with Eleanor I was 0's across the board for being dilated and effaced until the day I went into labor with her - 6 days past her due date). So, I was happy to learn I had made a teeny bit of progress, but some women can be partly dilated for weeks so it wasn't anything too exciting. The previous week the doctor and I had talked about him stripping my membranes at this appointment, so he went ahead and did that too (I had that done with Eleanor and it made no difference). I was due that Sunday and didn't want to go past my due date too much because: 1. I was feeling like I was ready to have the baby out and 2. Sam started his "long change" (week off of work) on the Friday before the due date so I wanted to take advantage of the days he already was given off of work. We set an induction date for Tuesday the 3rd. My doctor said to make an appointment to come in and see him the day before. When he left the room he said, "Well, I'm pretty sure you'll be having your baby on the induction date so I'll see you on Monday." That was that.

The day went on and by evening I started to feel some changes. I don't know if they were contractions or what, but I could just feel my body was changing. I decided to shower that evening to wash and straighten my hair in case anything did happen the next day (did the same thing with Eleanor haha). By then I had noticed that I had really dropped - something I never really experienced or felt I had with Eleanor, so I knew real changes were happening. I woke up on and off through the night, but that was already the norm for me since I always had to get up to use the bathroom. At 5 am I felt wide awake and thought I was experiencing contractions. I sent Sam and email and told him that I wasn't saying I was in labor, but I could definitely feel my body was changing and I knew I'd be seeing Dr. Holme's before Monday to have the baby. By 6:00 am I realized I really was having contractions and went on knocked on my parent's bedroom door. Both my mom and dad came out and we started timing the contractions - they were 10 minutes apart. I felt hesitant to call Sam because I didn't want to make him drive out to Utah if it was a false alarm, but I realized it was probably the real deal and my mom assured me she thought it was too so I called Sammy. He had just gotten to work and said the roads were icy, but he would be on his way and get there as soon as possible. After that we continued to time the contractions and they slowly started getting closer together. Eleanor eventually woke up and I bawled pretty much anytime I looked at her - I knew how drastically our lives were going to change that day and the little girl had no idea! It was also emotional for me to think of her not being my only child anymore. Between contractions I got dressed, ate breakfast, and started packing up my things since I knew after I was released from the hospital I wanted to get back to WY as soon as possible and not spend time packing everything. By 9:00 am my contractions were 5 minutes apart so my mom and I were ready to head out the door. I asked my dad to give me a blessing, which he did. Sam had given me one before I left Wyoming, but it was also special to get one from my dad right before the hospital. My mom and I left and Dad stayed to watch Eleanor.

I got checked into the hospital and when they first checked me I was dilated to a 4. I told them that I did want an epidural, but the anesthesiologist was currently doing a c-section so I had to wait till he was done with that. I was so grateful to have my mom with me. It was a huge comfort to have her by my side for while Sam couldn't be there, and it felt special because she wasn't able to be around for any of Eleanor's birth. Fortunately, we had only been in the hospital for about 45 minutes before Sam made it there, so he didn't really miss much. The anesthesiologist eventually  made it in and gave me the epidural. Getting that always freaks me out a little bit so it's a relief when it is over. However, I still felt my contractions pretty strongly after it although my legs had gone numb so the doctor eventually had to come back in and give me more. I felt contractions a lot longer than I did with Eleanor but I made it through with my little coaching team of my mom and Sam by my side. The nurse we started the day with I absolutely loved but she eventually got pulled to go help a mom who was having twins but they were trying to delay her labor - the new nurse that was assigned to me wasn't our favorite. My doctor came in and checked on me at one point and later he came back in the room and said he wanted to check me one more time before heading back to the office. The nurse told him she had checked me just 15 minutes before and I was only at a 7.5. Dr. Holmes said he wanted to check me again any way, and the nurse ROLLED HER EYES. Sam and I were so over her! Any way, he checked me and said, "Well, she's at a 9.5 now so lets get things rolling! It's time to push for this baby!"

The actual pushing/delivery part was so different than with Eleanor. I felt a lot more in control and it was a lot more calm environment too. With Eleanor we had a nurse in training, older nurse, doctor, resident doctor, and the NICU team of about 3 people all in the room. This time when I was pushing it was only Sam, Dr. Holmes, the nurse and I. I felt like I could feel myself pushing where with Eleanor I couldn't really feel a thing and was getting so frustrated and exhausted after hours of pushing. I don't know exactly how long I pushed for, but it wasn't bad. I did have to get the oxygen mask on at one point, but everything still was calm (again...unlike with Eleanor where the vacuum suction thing wasn't working and then it was discovered she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck).  I remember Sam and the doctor telling me they could see his head and see his hair, but it wasn't nearly as dark as Eleanor's. Jordan eventually made it out and I could hear his crying. They were able to put him on me right away (I didn't get that with Elle) so it was amazing to see and touch him immediately. It is such an overwhelming feeling of joy and love getting to see your baby for the first time! They took him over to clean/weigh...and my mom came back in the room during that time. It was so fun to get to have her see him right away. I got to do skin to skin with Jordan and even nursed him (he latched on like a natural!). It was all so special. I loved seeing Sam hold his little boy. Totally melted my heart :)

Yes, it was worth it to drive nearly 200 miles for every appointment to see this doctor and have him deliver our baby. I love Dr. Holmes!

Jordan was born at 2:38 pm and weighed 7 lbs 2 ozs and was 19.5 inches long. We still had no name for him. We waited in the room while they got him checked out and then were transferred to the recovery room. My parents and little brother Taylor all came that evening to meet Jordan and Sam took the time to take Eleanor out to Chick-Fil-A. Unfortunately, the hospital had a policy that no one under the age of 14 was allowed on the maternity floor due to it being a bad flu season, so Eleanor wasn't going to get to meet Jordan until we were released. That broke my heart, but I had to get over it and just take advantage of the time to put all my attention on Jordan.

The siblings meeting for the first time via FaceTime...

When I realized I was in labor that morning I was really regretting my decision to have my membranes stripped because now the delivery date and time wasn't going as "planned". I know you just can't plan these things, but that's what drove me crazy with this pregnancy - especially with the state-to-state traveling. However, it all worked out and it couldn't have been a better day. I remember just feeling so happy and blessed every time I looked at Jordan and couldn't believe my baby #2 was in my arms! He is the perfect addition to our family.

September/October Catch Up

Towards the end of September Sam had to work the career fair at BYU so we all spent the week down in Utah. Eleanor had fun getting to ride her bike around and have Sam push her on it:
Later that morning I thought I had more fun in store for Eleanor as I decided to take her on a walk and I knew we would pass by some horses for her to see. Once we got to the field where the horses were, we saw that three of them were standing right at the fence that borders the sidewalk we were on. I took Eleanor out of the stroller and let her pet the horses. They didn't seem to mind us and although Eleanor was a little hesitant, she liked seeing them! We stood there for a few minutes then I put Elle back in the stroller and we continued on our way. We made it back to the condo about 10 minutes later and when I walked to the front of the stroller to pull Elle out I couldn't believe what I saw! Her eyes were BRIGHT red and she kept rubbing them. She started whining and Sam tried to start comforting her but within minutes her eyes were nearly swollen shut! It was the saddest thing ever. My heart just broke for her every time I looked at her! Luckily, I always keep children's Benadryl in the car so we had some on hand that we gave her right away. Once that seemed to set in she was in a lot better spirits, but looked nothing like our little Elle Rae!
Right after getting Benadryl and a bath:
Over 3 hours later during lunch, this is how she looked the whole day!

Luckily by the next day she was much better. We filled our days with fun like going to the park, splash pad, and even a night of family bowling! Eleanor was too cute in her little bowling shoes and really loved getting in on the action.

At the start of October we were able to enjoy conference weekend at home as a family. We painted pumpkins one day to get into the fall spirit

The following week we flew out to California and spent 3 days at DISNEYLAND. I already made a Shutterfly book with our pictures and memories from that trip so I'm not going to take the time to document it here, but I will say it was the best weekend for our little family! Eleanor was in heaven at the park, did so well traveling and with the full days. We all had a really great time. Sam's sister, Maddie, her husband and daughter met us there for 2 of the days. We did the Mickey's Halloween party the first night and would recommend that to anyone. It was a fun and memorable weekend! We already can't wait to go back again as a family some day. Here's just a few snapshots:

The rest of October included enjoying our last few days of park weather...
A Halloween party hosted by our friends. We attended as a witch and "bat-man"...
We took advantage of some Friday night entertainment by attending the local high school football games - I love going to these! Eleanor loves watching the cheerleaders :) One night Sam was sick, so Eleanor and I partied together at the game while our man rested at home.
Sam tested out a pretty amazing recipe for Pumpkin Cream Cheese Chocolate Chip bread (we love fall baking in this house!) and he had his trusty helper, Eleanor, along side. As soon as she sees me getting baking these out in the kitchen she yells, "Helper!" She's getting to be a pro.
The day before Halloween our ward play group put on a Halloween party for the kids. It was fun and this picture of Eleanor makes me laugh...
The day before Halloween is also Sammy's birthday! We kept it low key with a dinner at home and some cake. Eleanor was happy (as she is every day) to give Sam a great big hug as soon as he walked in the door from work

We had a great Halloween night. We picked up some pizza for dinner and got Eleanor ready for her first trick-or-treating experience. We were just about to head out the door when our first trick-or-treaters rang our doorbell. Sam opened the door, they recited "Trick-or-treat!", and Sam then gave them some candy from our bowl. When he shut the door and turned around, Eleanor held up her basket to him and said "Trick-treat!" It sure didn't take her long to figure out the program!!!

Eleanor would say "trick-or-treat" at each door, but was a little shy about it. She did run from house to house anxious to get more candy. At one point she stopped in the middle of the sidewalk, put her bucket down, pulled out a candy, held it up and said, "Open it?" She couldn't wait to dig into the goods! By the end of the rounds her bucket was getting a little heavy for her, both Sam and I tried to help her carry it, but she wouldn't have any of that. She was determined to carry her candy all by herself!
Checking out the loot...
I don't remember when this is from, but we were driving Utah to Wyoming and Eleanor passed out mid tater-tot bite, it made me laugh :)
